Assured: Multiple applications for credit can damage your score - we explain how new 'soft' checks help you find the most suitable product.James Jones of credit reference agency Experian says: 'Every application that is made leaves a footprint on your credit report. If you’re making a lot of applications in a short space of time then this can have a negative impact on your score.' However, some comparison sites and lenders have introduced a 'soft' check feature to give customers an indication if they're likely to get accepted for a product. The majority of firms offering the service have focused on credit card applications, with comparison services Confused.com and Moneysupermarket, plus lenders Nationwide and Barclaycard all on-board.Nationwide also extends the 'soft' check facility for loan applications and Moneysupermarket is trialling a service with a select number of customers. More. These 'soft' checks are still visible on your credit report, but they do not affect your rating like a 'hard' check might.A 'soft' check might happen when you’re having your ID checked, getting an insurance quotation or even checking your credit score for yourself. When potential lenders check your credit report, they will not see the soft inquiries. This means that, within reason, you can make as many 'soft' check inquires as you'd like, without damaging your score. The perfect way to decide if a particular product is for you.
Less of a risk: Confused.com is one of the sites offering a 'soft' search for credit cardsThe comparison websitesMoneysupermarket and Confused.com both offer 'soft' search options for customers applying for credit cards.Moneysupermarket is currently trialling a 'soft' search loan option, however, this service is only available to a limited number of customers who are emailed by the comparison site to try out the service. It hopes to fully launch the service in the near future.GoCompare currently offers a 'smart search' option for loans - this is not a 'soft' credit check. It works in a similar way and is an option feature which allows customers to enter extra information.

The service is powered by LoveMoney to match a customers set of questions to a providers score card. Lenders have different 'score cards' or sets of criteria that they want from customers - these are closely guarded secrets. The 'smart search' then makes a recommendation to the customer on the provider that would be most suitable to them. Use our to work out how long it is going to take you to repay your debts. Also you may find our useful when considering a loan. How it works: With Moneysupermarket and Confused.com customers have to enter basic information, including their name, address, date of birth and salary, and then their credit file is matched to the lenders score criteria.Lenders have particular criteria for accepting customers - but they keep this information secret.Typically it is based on your credit score, the information you give them and their own set of rules.
For example, they may be looking for customers who want to repay a loan over three years or they might choose to exclude anyone with a County Court Judgement (CCJs), a debt chasing procedure undertaken by aggrieved lenders. The comparison site then returns a of credit cards which are the most suitable, along with a score out of ten which indicates how appropriate you would be for the card. Are they reliable?: There are no guarantees when using a 'soft' search tool. They are a guide for how likely you are to get expected, so the higher the score the better chance you have.Who should use them?: Everyone. They don't leave a mark on your credit score so they're a good way to do research when thinking about applying for a product. Be prepared: Nationwide is only lender to offer potential customers a 'soft' check for loans and credit cardsThe lendersNationwide and Barclaycard both offer 'soft' search options for customers applying for credit cards. Nationwide also offers this service on loan applications.Barclaycard's service is powered by HD Solutions and uses Call Credit for its search criteria (the same firms used by Confused.com and Moneysupermarket), while Nationwide internally developed its software in partnership with credit reference agency Experian. How it works: Both lenders offer customers pre-application checks to customers to see if they would be accepted for the product before applying.
It is similar to the service offered by the comparison websites, however customers are given an estimated rate for the product as well as a percentage of how likely they are to be accepted. APR – or annual percentage rate – describes the true cost of borrowing money over the course of a year. It takes in to account not only any interest you will pay but also other fees that you may have to pay. All lenders have to tell you what their APR is before you sign an agreement. It will vary from lender to lender.Customers have to input their basic data and a 'soft' search is applied to their credit report.
This then returns the rate that customers are likely to be given when making a full application. They can then choose to walk away from the application (leaving no mark on their credit score), or, if they're happy with the rate, they can proceed with a full application. How reliable are they?: Again, there are no guarantees that you will be accepted for the product. But you're given the rate by the lender and as it’s a direct search with the provider it is likely to be a closer match.Plus, you have the advantage of the lender applying its own acceptance rules to the search, as these are not always shared with comparison websites.Who should use them?: If you've already done your research and are interested in a credit card (or loan from Nationwide only), then you can check the likelihood that you’ll be accepted for the product before you damage your credit report.
